Differences Between SC APC and SC UPC Connectors in FTTH

In the deployment of Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks, choosing the right connector type is crucial for ensuring stable and efficient performance. Two of the most common connectors are SC APC and SC UPC. While they share similarities in shape and size, their differences significantly impact network quality and applications. Understanding these differences helps technicians and network planners make the right decisions, especially when working with SC APC connector FTTH projects.

The primary difference between SC APC and SC UPC lies in the polishing of the fiber end face. SC UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) connectors feature a flat end face polished with a slight curve, which reduces signal loss when mated. SC APC connector FTTH In contrast, SC APC (Angled Physical Contact) connectors are polished at an 8-degree angle. This angled design minimizes back reflection, making SC APC more suitable for high-precision applications where return loss must be kept very low.

Performance is another key distinction. SC UPC connectors typically achieve a return loss of about -55 dB, which is sufficient for standard data or telecommunication uses. SC APC connectors, however, can reach return losses of -60 dB or better, making them ideal for applications such as FTTH, CATV, and passive optical networks where even minimal reflection can degrade signal quality.

Color coding also helps differentiate them. SC UPC connectors are usually blue, while SC APC connectors are green. This visual distinction helps technicians avoid mixing them during installation, since improper mating of APC and UPC connectors can lead to high insertion loss and poor network performance.

In summary, both connectors have their place in fiber networks, but for FTTH deployments where performance and reliability are top priorities, the SC APC connector FTTH solution is often the preferred choice. Its superior return loss characteristics make it essential for delivering stable high-speed connections to homes and businesses.
